2 weeks, 40 people, 40 hats

2 week, 40 people, 40 hats, was initiated during a two-week residency programme at De Fabriek in Eindhoven in 2024. Forty artists worked alongside each other in a shared studio and exhibition space. I arrived in the morning and left late in the evening, participating in each other’s practices, working towards the final exhibition, and developing my own project.

I made hats. One hat per person, sometimes two when it became possible. Making a hat took time. During this time, I sat in the studio, the kitchen, or another corner of the space, talking while working. Participants chose their own colours, and as the process evolved, some hats were taken apart and remade, opening up new possibilities. Unmaking and revising became part of the work, allowing people to receive a reworked version of their hat.

At the end of the residency, all participants were invited to keep their hats under one condition: during the exhibition, the hat was worn or placed somewhere within the exhibition space. Throughout the exhibition, the hats appeared in different locations across the building, moving through the space with the people. Individual objects gradually formed a collective presence.

After the residency, three of the hats were translated into ceramic.

o2 week, 40 people, 40 hats, ontstond tijdens een tweeweekse residentie bij De Fabriek in Eindhoven in 2024. Veertig kunstenaars werkten naast elkaar in een gedeelde atelier- en tentoonstellingsruimte. Ik was er vanaf de ochtend tot laat in de avond, nam deel aan elkaars praktijken, werkte toe naar de eindexpositie en ontwikkelde mijn eigen project.

Mutsen. Eén muts per persoon, soms twee (gewoon omdat het kan). Het maken van een muts kostte tijd. In die tijd zat ik in het atelier, de keuken of een andere hoek van de ruimte, kletsen en werken. De deelnemers kozen hun eigen kleuren en naarmate het proces vorderde, werden sommige mutsen weer uit elkaar gehaald en opnieuw gebreeën, waardoor nieuwe mogelijkheden ontstonden. Het loshalen en herzien werd onderdeel van het werk, waardoor mensen een aangepaste versie van hun muts ontvingen.

Aan het einde van de residentie mochten alle deelnemers hun muts houden, onder één voorwaarde: tijdens de expositie werd de muts gedragen of bevond deze zich ergens in de tentoonstellingsruimte. Tijdens de expositie doken de mutsen op verschillende plekken in het gebouw op en bewogen zij mee met de mensen. Individuele objecten vormden zo geleidelijk een collectieve aanwezigheid.

Na afloop van de residentie heb ik drie van de mutsen vertaald naar keramiek.
